Contemporary dance
Floor work, weight transfer and travelling phrases for dancers who already have ballet or jazz technique underneath them.
Contemporary builds on the control from ballet and the attack from jazz, then asks dancers to use both while off balance: falling, recovering, taking weight through the floor and travelling across the room in one phrase rather than a count of eight. Classes are open to any dancer with at least a year of another style behind them.

Do I need ballet experience for contemporary?
At least a year of ballet or jazz first, so the technique underneath the movement is there before we ask a dancer to move off balance.
Is contemporary part of the exam stream?
It sits alongside it. Most exam stream dancers also take contemporary, but it is not assessed the way the graded ballet syllabus is.
